Hello ladies - :)

As a successful WAHM for 6 years, I can respond to the myths with how it all played out for me.

Starting my home business, I had three children under the age of 3, all in diapers, breastfeeding 2 of them!

Was it easy? No. Was it extremely difficult? No.

The way I went about it was working around their naptimes. I was fortunate to have children that did nap at the same time and were pretty well behaved. I had a very consistent, disciplined schedule and I did not hire a babysitter or daycare at any point in time. Actually, now that they are 9, 7, 6 and I also have a 3 year old- I am finally hiring a babysitter while hubby and I go on date nights. :)

The reason why I was able to work from home the way that I did was because my business was not labor intensive. Many businesses require handling inventory, products, billing, collecting, etc.

Were that the case, I would NOT be saying the same things I am saying now. My business is a business of word of mouth, relationship and team building and many of my business partners are moms.

We use the internet, telephone and many times, team calls - to build our business. I can honestly say that it has been and still is doable to work this business around your children without hiring day care.

Can you advance quicker if you DO hire daycare?

Yes, you sure can. You can KICk butt if you have 8 hours/day to work your business!! :)

For example, I can have a mom join my team and she can KICK butt and be MORE available than a mom who was "working around her children" like myself -- and she can make more money than me by doing so. The amount of time/effort you put in will yield results to match that.

So one can make a choice to pay for full-time daycare, as Vera suggested- and with that, perhaps reach a full-time income in 6-12 months. I chose not to do that and there is no right or wrong decision, each mom knows what she needs.

I do agree with Vera on Myth #2 - it is NOT a do-what-you-want- when you want it. I have gone to most of my chidren's class trips, shows at school and have been President and Founder of a Moms Club, a very fulfilling 6 years that I have absolutely enjoyed with my kids. With that, I chose to work from home around my children "part-time" - has it been great?

Heck yea!! :)

I can go on and on, but the point I'd like to make is that each of us can design this to be the business we want for our family, whether it be one child or four like myself!! ( :+)

Mrs Labelle,
You are right. Working from home, or being self employed has many perks. However this article was about addressing the myths. I will certainly write another one that talks about the positive of working from home.

First of all, I agree with some of the points that were made. I do object to the statement about seeing the pictures of women with their kids happy and smiling "making you sick"!! So I would like to address that first. While I did not come home to work until after my children were grown, I have many business partners who are thrilled to be working from home with their children at their sides. One of my partners has two little ones under the age of 5. She is able to be the Mommy that they need while working a very successful home based business. She will be the first to tell you that her ability to work effectively starts with training her children properly. This includes training them to respect the fact that she is on the phone with a client and to not interrupt. Sure there are times when I am on the phone with her that one of her babies interrupts her, but those times are very limited. We all know that for some reason Mom getting on the phone is a child magnet!!! I will not argue that point! I am of the opinion that as in all things in life, we teach our children to be respectful from the time they are very, very young. The lessons we teach our children at even the youngest age will carry them very far in life!
Myth #1: I do not believe that you need to hire full time child care if you are working at home. Obviously, this does depend on the type of business you have. Many of my business partners who have children are also on a good schedule. They work while the children are napping, for instance. They plan their work around the important things in their lives. If it is important for them to play and spend time with the children during the day, but maybe Daddy can take that on for a few hours in the evening, freeing them up to work undisturbed during the evening hours, that works! Some of my business partners do make arrangements to have some help, especially if they have an active household, but most find that is not necessary. So the blanket statement that you have to have full time child care is just simply not the case 100% of the time.
Myth #2 A flexible schedule is simply life - think about it! No, I do not have a boss standing over me telling me I have to work a certain number of hours. I work what is needed to get the job done. Many individuals who work from home will tell you that their success is based more on what they are not willing to give up than on what their business activities are. I believe that you set your own schedule. To be successful at a home based business, you need to plan (i.e. schedule) your time and your activities. Can that be flexible - absolutely! You need to have a few qualities or develop qualities for success, such as being a self starter and planning your work then working your plan. These are success strategies for any job, at home or in Corporate America.
Myth #3 I mostly agree with your statements on this. When I was first at home, there was that perception that I was my own boss and could therefore be at the beck and call of whoever. You simply state the obvious. I WORK from home! I would love to join you for coffee or shopping or lunch out, but I need to schedule you in. Is it stressful to tell a loved one that? Sure it is, once or twice, but they get the picture! So schedule them in - go have fun for a few hours-that's WHY you work from home!
My working at home was a huge adjustment from working in Corporate America. I was accustomed to a very regimented schedule. Home was merely the place I crashed at night and showered in the morning! Now, I am spending time at the home my husband and I poured countless hours and dollars into and I am enjoying it! My business is successful because I work consistently and make sure that I spend my time with revenue producing activities. My husband is very supportive and understands that when I am on the phone or at the kitchen table with a client or a potential client, that I need to be left alone and undisturbed. After 30 years of marriage, we can have lunch together, take naps (if my schedule permits) and even do very spontaneous things, like spur of the moment vacations and the like. My income will reflect my efforts, but the LIFE I have gained has been the grandest experience of all! My only regret is that I did not start my business sooner and leave Corporate America sooner.

Hi SKL,
Check out books and blogs offered by Debra Condren. She has a book Ambition is not a dirty word where she compares the business tactics of a man and a woman. Also her blog, www.ambitionisnotadirtyword.com.

There is also a non profit organization, Count Me In or Make Mine a Million, that's helping women build million dollar businesses. They help women come up with tactics to increase revenue to one million and plus.

Let me know what you think.

Interesting topic - I'm particularly interested in how ethics work into women's entrepreneurial successes.

I always like to think that women are inherently different from men when it comes to translating values into actions. I think it's more natural for us to create synergies, to be considerate of each other's needs, to desire only what produces a net benefit for those involved. We'd be the best presidents, generals, and CEOs because we're better at seeing multiple sides of every issue and less likely to be motivated primarily by ego. (Yes, I am sexist, I admit it.)

Well, over the years I have met plenty of women who have challenged this view. Liars, fakers, ruthless competers, people who can't control their emotions, people who can't think past their nose. Indeed, working with women is no guarantee of anything, though I still think most of the generalizations I wrote above are true on balance.

You say "do not rely on anyone to be nice." True, but as we build our businesses, we have to take a chance on others as we ask them to take a chance on us. Since women are not well represented in many industries, we don't have established networks and mentoring relationships to bridge the gap between aspiration and reputation. How does a woman entrepreneur develop a trade reputation in a man's world? Do we do it very differently from men, and what are the pros and cons? I don't know if there is any data out there on this topic - I find there are practically no women in my market who are doing what I do / hope to do. Any thoughts / reading resources specific to women professional services entrepreneurs?

I am pretty much multitasking whenever I'm awake and my nanny isn't here. Conference calls during the kids' breakfast / dinner, revising spreadsheets between requests to help dress a doll, squeezing a shower in during the girls' potty stop, etc. It's become my brand of normal. Since being a working mom has forced me to be so efficient, I can only imagine how amazing I'll be once my kids are self-sufficient.
